What you can do with it

A strategy lab

Pick two bodies and one or more aspects, or set your own phase angles in Cycle mode. Every run rebuilds the trades across your whole date range, so you can change a rule and test it again.

Regime overlay on the equity curve

With 10 or more closed trades, the equity curve carries a HOT/COLD overlay from a cycle model fitted to past trades, marking stretches where that fitted cycle was rising or falling.

Take-profit and stop-loss tables

See how a range of fixed take-profit and stop-loss levels, each tested on its own, would have changed past results.

Save and reload strategies

Keep a library of your strategies, reload one to change it and save the variation under a new name, and see saved strategies’ upcoming signals on your Trade Calendar.

How it works

  1. Step 01

    Choose a mode

Standard mode tests the days when two bodies form an aspect, a set angle between them such as 90°. Cycle mode splits the angle between two bodies into phases you define, each marked long or short.

  2. Step 02

    Set the rules

Pick two bodies, from the Sun to Pluto plus the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu, an orb (how far from exact still counts) and a date range. Add aspects, a direction and an exit, or in Cycle mode your phase angles and timeframe.

  3. Step 03

    Run the backtest

Each run finds every signal in your date range and tests it on E-mini S&P 500 futures (ES=F) prices. Trades are rebuilt on every run, so each change to a rule is tested across the whole range.

  4. Step 04

    Review and save

Read the trade list, equity curve, regime overlay and exit tables. On the Pro plan you can save a strategy to your library, and the upcoming signal dates shown when you saved it appear on your Trade Calendar.

What you’ll see

Results appear below the settings after each run. Some panels need a minimum number of closed trades: the filter comparison and the exit tables need three, and the equity curve and cycle analysis need ten.

Total Trades, Win Rate and Total Return
Total Trades counts closed trades, with winners and losers in brackets. Win Rate is winners divided by closed trades, and only a trade that made money counts as a win. Total Return adds up the per-trade percentage returns without compounding, with the average trade below it.
Upcoming Signals
Signal dates from today through the End Date of your test, each labeled with its aspect or phase. On the Pro plan, a bookmark on each date adds it to your watchlist.
Trade chart and Trade History
A daily ES=F candlestick chart marks the entry and exit of each closed trade. The table lists every trade, newest first, with entry and exit dates, percent return and W or L, and a dash where a trade has no exit yet.
Equity Curve & Regime Cycles
Your trades compounded from an editable starting capital (default $1,000), with End Equity, Total Return, Max Drawdown and Win Rate. This Total Return compounds, so it differs from the stat card’s simple sum. Max Drawdown is the largest fall from a previous high.
HOT and COLD regime
Green (HOT) dots mark trades where the fitted cycle (solid orange line) was rising, red (COLD) dots where it was falling. A dashed line extends the fit ahead, and the regime forecast summarizes where that extension sits relative to the midline. It is a fit to past trades, not a prediction.
Bartels test
Checks whether wins and losses bunch up at particular phases of the strongest detected cycle. A lower p-value means the bunching is less likely to be chance. Low enough p-values are labeled Strong, Significant or Weak, with Strong for the lowest. A result that covers too few turns of the cycle is marked low confidence.
Trade Filter Comparison
Compares all trades with two subsets. Williams A/D keeps trades where the Williams Accumulation/Distribution indicator, a running total of buying and selling pressure, supported the trade’s direction on the entry day. EC HOT keeps trades where the strategy’s recent trades, the trade itself included, were mostly winners with a net gain.
Take-Profit and Stop-Loss Optimizers
Tests your trades with one fixed take-profit or stop-loss, a set gain or loss that ends a trade, across a range of levels. Hit Rate and Trigger Rate show how often price rose or fell that far from entry. Each table marks a Suggested level based on those rates.
Yearly Returns
One bar per calendar year of entry, green or red by sign, showing that year’s trade returns added together. The tooltip also shows the year’s profit in price points for one unit.

How the numbers are calculated

Every result comes from your settings applied to two inputs, planet positions and ES=F prices, using the fixed rules below.

Planet positions

Positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, calculated in the star-based sidereal zodiac rather than the tropical one. Daily tests use one position per day, and hourly tests use one position per hour. Rahu is the Moon’s north node, a point where its orbit crosses the Sun’s apparent path, and Ketu is the point exactly opposite.

Finding signals

In Standard mode a signal falls on the day the two bodies come closest to your aspect, as long as that is within the orb. Signals from one condition that fall close together are merged into the one nearest exact. With Rahu or Ketu, the same aspect to the opposite node also counts. In Cycle mode a signal falls where the angle between the two bodies crosses one of your phase angles within the orb.

Trades and returns

Trades enter at an open and exit at a close, on daily bars or, in Cycle mode’s Hourly timeframe, hourly bars. Same Day trades close on the signal day, Sell on Condition trades at the next unused exit signal, and Cycle trades at the next phase crossing, where the next trade starts. On daily bars, a signal on a non-trading day moves forward to the next trading day, or is skipped if that day is too far away. Returns are a percentage of the entry price, with no commissions, slippage or position sizing.

Regime cycles and the Bartels test

With 10 or more closed trades, a cycle model is fitted to the compounded equity curve. It looks for the cycles that repeat most strongly in the strategy’s results. The fitted cycle sets HOT and COLD, and the strongest cycle feeds the Bartels test. The fit covers the whole history at once, so it describes the past.

Data coverage and refresh

Backtests run on E-mini S&P 500 futures (ES=F) only. Daily prices start in September 2000, the default test window starts on January 1, 2005, and hourly prices start in June 2010. Prices are refreshed overnight, Monday to Friday, and every run rebuilds the trades from the stored prices. A saved strategy keeps its settings and the upcoming signals shown when you saved it, which are not recalculated later.

Questions about Strategy Builder

Which market does the Strategy Builder backtest?

Every backtest runs on E-mini S&P 500 futures (ES=F), and the page has no symbol selector. Daily prices go back to September 2000 and are refreshed overnight, Monday to Friday. The default test window starts on January 1, 2005, and Pro members can change it.

How is the Strategy Builder win rate calculated?

Win rate is the number of winning trades divided by all closed trades. A trade wins only if it made money from entry to exit, so a flat trade counts as a loss, and trades without an exit yet are left out. The Trade Filter Comparison table counts break-even trades as wins, so its figure can differ slightly.

What do HOT and COLD mean in a backtest?

They describe stretches of the equity curve. A cycle model is fitted to the strategy’s compounded equity curve, and trades where the fitted cycle was rising are marked HOT, trades where it was falling COLD. The labels are an overlay: they do not remove trades from the backtest or change its statistics. EC HOT in the Trade Filter Comparison is a separate rule based on recent trades.

Does the backtest include commissions and slippage?

No. Each trade is measured in percent from the entry open to the exit close, with no commissions, slippage, contract size or position sizing. Profit shown in dollars on the price chart and in Yearly Returns is price points for one unit, not per futures contract.

Can I try the Strategy Builder before upgrading?

Yes. Any signed-in account without the Pro plan, including a free account, gets preview mode. It runs one fixed example: a long, same-day test on Venus–Ketu conjunctions from 2005 onward, which under the lunar-node rule also include Venus–Rahu conjunctions. Every results panel is shown, but the settings are locked and strategies cannot be saved.

Can a strategy require two aspects at the same time?

No. You can add several entry conditions, but each one produces signals on its own, so the backtest takes a trade whenever any of them occurs. Selecting several aspects within one condition works the same way.
